What is ARC Energy Ideas podcast?
The ARC Energy Ideas podcast, produced by the ARC Energy Research Institute, explores critical topics in energy, economics, and environmental sustainability. Hosted by experts, it features insightful discussions with industry leaders, policymakers and innovators, covering topics in the global energy industry.

Our President and CEO, François Poirier, recently joined highly-respected energy experts Jackie Forrest and Peter Tertzakian on ARC Energy Ideas. The podcast is known for discussing the global forces shaping the energy industry. From political shifts to environmental challenges, the conversation offered a strategic glimpse into North America’s evolving energy landscape. François’ participation highlighted his leadership and unique insight as the CEO of North America’s only midstream company operating in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Why is this important?

Energy is at the center of the conversation. Political leaders across the globe are prioritizing conversations on energy challenges and opportunities like never before. In the U.S., we're engaging with perhaps the most energy-literate administration we’ve seen in decades. In Canada, policymakers are actively seeking insight from industry leaders, looking for meaningful input to shape energy policies. François is seizing this moment to advocate for our industry.

Three key takeaways from this timely discussion

1) North American energy dominance

With an unmatched presence across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, we are strategically positioned to drive better outcomes to solidify North America as an energy leader. Our integrated infrastructure crosses borders seamlessly, proof that energy doesn’t adhere to borders. We know that by working together, the three nations can achieve far more than individually.

Through our integrated infrastructure, we are strengthening North American energy. We know that when Canada, the U.S. and Mexico work together, it results in better outcomes for all three countries than each could accomplish individually.

2) The case for regulatory reform

At CERAWeek, regulatory reform took centre stage. François reinforced this message during his discussion with Jackie and Peter.

"Uncertainty is the enemy of investment." François Poirier – CERAWeek

Uncertainty in regulatory processes discourages critical investments in energy infrastructure. Clear rules and transparent approval systems are essential to attracting capital that can drive growth and innovation in the energy sector.

François highlighted our Southeast Gateway Pipeline project as a strong example of what’s possible when government and industry work together. From permitting to execution, this project has set new standards by securing permits in record time, coming in 13 per cent under budget, and aligning with the Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) on an in-service no later than mid-2025.

Canada can apply Mexico’s success by reducing permitting timelines and increasing regulatory certainty to support critical energy infrastructure investments.

3) An opportunity for Canadian LNG to compete

“This is a new day, and this is our time.” These powerful words from François echo the incredible opportunity before Canada to compete for, and ultimately win, a share of the global LNG market.

Here’s why we have a real competitive advantage: the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) is one of the most cost-competitive regions in the world. Add that to our direct Pacific coast access and a geographic advantage to Asian markets. Right now, Canada has a three-to-five-year head start over Alaska to secure its place as a leading LNG exporter and LNG project developers who are willing to deploy capital on the west coast of Canada.

With a 10-day shipping edge to Asian markets compared to the U.S. Gulf Coast and no permitting options for LNG projects on the U.S. west coast, Canada stands out as a key player in meeting growing global energy needs.

This is our time

We are at the table, driving important conversations that impact the North American energy industry. We are building strong and lasting relationships with governments, policymakers and the communities we serve to drive meaningful progress across the continent.
