Redwater Cogeneration Plant
Overview
The Redwater Cogeneration Plant, located at Williams Energy Canada Fractionation and Storage Plant in Redwater, Alta., has provided the province with approximately 46 megawatts of electricity since 2001. The plant is customized to use a blend of natural gas and regeneration gas, a product of Williams Energy’s fractionation business, to fuel the gas turbine.
FAQs
What is a cogeneration plant?
Essentially, a cogeneration plant is a power plant that uses two sources of fuel to produce electricity. In the case of Redwater Cogeneration Plant, these are natural gas and regeneration gas. Gasses are fired to turn a turbine, and are then passed through a waste-heat recovery system used to heat water and glycol, which is used in a fractionation facility by the plant’s primary client.
How much power does the Redwater Cogeneration Plant produce?
The Redwater Plant produces 40 megawatts of electricity, with an additional 60 megawatts of thermal energy.
What kind of fuel does the Redwater plant use?
Redwater uses a combination of natural gas and regeneration gas. Regeneration gas is created through the fractionation process used by the plant’s primary client, Williams Energy. These gasses are used to power a turbine and duct burner.
