The study
Small Modular Reactors: Feasibility Study for Oil Sands Applications (SAGD Facility)
Cenovus is looking to reduce emissions associated with its oil sands operations and together through a partnership, Cenovus, TC Energy and Alberta Innovates, are investigating several potential technologies. This includes the possible deployment of SMRs at its oil sands operations to replace natural gas-fueled steam generators.
The timeline
Study released: September 2023
The study aims to investigate the potential benefits of incorporating SMRs as a source of steam and power for SAGD operations. If successful, this cutting-edge technology would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve operational efficiency. While no specific projects are currently anticipated, this study provides valuable insights into this innovative technology's viability and potential applications.
