What if happy hour helped create renewable energy? TC Energy is doing just that with a $29.3 million investment in a renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility near the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN. Once operational, the facility will capture a byproduct of the distilling process to generate methane gases. Those gasses will be recovered to produce pipeline-quality RNG that will be directly connected to a local natural gas utility.

Virginia
Virginia had a seemingly intractable energy problem. It needed to increase energy capacity while at the same time reducing emissions. TC Energy proposed a solution: the Virginia Electrification Project. It’s an expansion and reliability plan that helps avoid outages and saves emissions equivalent to 6,800 cars annually. Not only will it reduce emissions, but also help Virginia have more sustainable and reliable power.

Our portfolio can solve the intermittency problems often associated with carbon-free energy. When clouds cover the sun or the wind is slow, we can still rely on a variety of other energy production and storage systems like pumped storage to compensate and provide reliable energy morning and night.

Building Hydrogen Hubs
Trucks move roughly 72% of America’s freight by weight each year, delivering the goods we all rely on every day. Imagine if many of those trucks stopped using carbon-emitting fossil fuels and started using hydrogen-powered electric fuel cells. We’d be able to remove millions of metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) from the atmosphere.
That’s why TC Energy is co-developing hydrogen production and distribution hubs to one day supply electric trucks with the hydrogen they need to power their fuel cells. If hydrogen power sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same fuel used to power rockets. Like those rockets, hydrogen-powered fuel cells use compressed hydrogen gas, but unlike a rocket, the fuel isn’t burned. Instead, it’s fed into a fuel cell stack that transforms the hydrogen’s chemical energy into electricity that powers an electric motor. It’s essentially an electric car, but rather than plugging it into a charge port, it’s filled with zero-emitting hydrogen gas.
This kind of hydrogen infrastructure will play a part in what could one day be a carbon-free shipping industry. It’s one way TC Energy is finding new ways to solve complex energy problems and ensure a safer, cleaner energy future.
